Welcome to FitIn!
I can’t tell you how excited I am to be writing this blog post; the very first blog on this brand new site.
To introduce myself: My name is Catherine, and I’m the Founder of FitIn. I’m an injured runner. I love doing Kung Fu for the brain work and because it’s badass. Then there’s the Kettlebell…it actually reminds me a lot of running, except that it’s weights, and stationary. I’ve been wanting for years to get back to a Tango class again, but somehow I ended up starting yoga, instead. Well, you get the idea: I like variety.
I’m pretty much your average mom next door, so I also have to look up classes for my kid…martial arts, ballet, soccer…it got to be a lot of websites that I had to navigate, and it took a lot of time. And if you’ve seen any wine ad, you know that moms don’t have a lot of time (unless there’s an open wine bar). So after one full afternoon of research, I took an angry sip of coffee and muttered, “someone needs to figure out a better way of doing this.”
On the flip side of that coin, I began to notice that there are a lot of exciting local gyms, studios, schools and rings. Also class instructors, independent instructors and personal trainers. Folks with a passion for fitness, prowess, learning and health. These are largely small business owners, and provide an important service to their communities. These are the experts who help people like you and me be strong, flexible and fit. They are the ones who understand that everyone is different, both physically and emotionally. Some people like and stay fit with a long run, while others need yoga, or do better with a crossfit class. We all require something different, possibly something customised.
Health is probably the single most important topic in the world (along with climate change), because these are things that threaten our survival if they aren’t squared away. We need air to breathe, but we also need healthy lungs to carry us through our lives. We know this instinctively, and gravitate toward enjoyable forms of movement in order to best live our lives. At the same time, consider how many options we have for discovering fitness! Endless ideas and opportunities, and they could look like horseback lessons, heavy lifting, circus classes, triathlons, trampoline, hockey or Krav Maga. In a world where we are always looking for a new experience (example: a new Sunday brunch place every weekend), classes that broaden our mind, strengthen our body and provide an experience truly are Golden.
Just as important as physical health is mental health, and it’s barely starting to get the attention it deserves. There are a lot of challenges in our society, and the discrepancy between online connectedness that doesn’t always manifest as real-life connection has us stressed and alone. Fitness is a fantastic antidote for this. Encouraging those who feel disconnected to attend a fitness class is a wonderful way to get out, be with people, and have fun. The exercise itself is also a balm to depression and anxiety, and we kept this in mind when building our platform; we want to facilitate the easiest possible task for those who want to include exercise therapy in their roster of treatments.
Fast forward a year and a bit, and here I am putting before you a tool that can be used both by the general public, to help them efficiently and knowledgeably find and enjoy movement of all types and levels, but also by the fitness industry to better promote their business to an engaged audience! Imagine an end-to-end platform where you can research, be inspired, read reviews, look at photos, interact with the community…and then book your next class…all in one place? My hope is that exercise classes of every type will be able to fill their vacant spots with folks looking for a good , sweaty old time.
Enjoy, and I look forward to hearing what you think! Join us on Facebook and Instagram (both @fitin.io) and share your stories with us!
