Welcome to FitIn! Please introduce yourself?
My name is Alex Fernandes. I am a personal trainer, powerlifting enthusiast, with a black belt in Taekwon Do. I live in downtown Toronto with my girlfriend and dog.
Tell us a bit about the classes you teach?
I provide various personal training and coaching services which include: private, semi-private, and online coaching. These services are offered both in a studio gym session, or remotely where I meet you at your home, condo gym or office.
What inspires you on a daily basis?
I am inspired daily to continually learn more about health – both physical and mental – and how fitness positively affects the two. Helping others reach their potential physically, while improving their health is extremely gratifying.
What’s your absolute favourite thing to do?
My favourite thing to do is compete in powerlifting. There is no competition quite like it, because although we are competing against each other, your primary competition is yourself.
Beyond that, the atmosphere is one of the most supportive things I’ve ever experienced. Everyone encourages each other because there is an empathetic understanding to the hard work we all put in the gym, to continually become a better version of ourselves.
What’s your greatest fitness challenge, and how do you deal with it?
My greatness fitness challenge is the ever-growing science surrounding fitness. There is a not only a lot of competing ideologies, but new methodologies, new studies disproving what was once thought to be leading edge, etc. These constant adaptations are necessary, but it becomes increasingly difficult to implement all that is available both as an athlete and as a coach.
If you could work out with anyone alive or dead, who would it be?
If I could work out with Boris Sheiko, I would learn more about powerlifting in one day than most will in a lifetime. He is one of the premier powerlifting and Olympic-lifting strength coaches in the world, and has coached countless champions.
If you could do one thing (that you can’t currently do), what would it be?
Travel the world, while not missing any training days.
