A couple of months back, a friend introduced me to a meal kit service by sending me a free basket, which was very much welcomed. I made the food, ate it, enjoyed the experience well enough.
But it got me thinking…were there any ‘fitness-inspired’ meal kits out there, designed specifically for folks who are in training, are extremely active, or looking to alter their diet to achieve strength or weight loss goals?
After a little research, I found a Canadian company, based out of London, Ontario called LiveFit Foods. Bonus: the food comes pre-prepped and ready to heat-and-eat, so there’s no meal prep, if that’s not your thing.
You can curate your own box by choosing individual meals, or you can also get a ‘lifestyle package’, which is a combination of meals made with a specific goal in mind, or based on a specific diet. Here’s what they’ve got:
- Muscle Gain package
- Weight Loss package
- Keto package
- Fat-burner package
- Gluten-free package
- Halal package
- Vegan/vegetarian/plant-based package
- …and they even have a student package
The deal on the meals
The recipes are prepared by a chef, and the packages are all made with ‘real’ food – not heavily processed, and not over-cooked or over-prepared. Honestly, it looked like something you could have meal-prepped yourself – with big chunks of broccoli and meat that wasn’t tiny bites.
They position their ingredients as carefully hand-selected, and point out that by replacing empty calories with nutritionally-dense foods, your body will react accordingly. This was my goal, because I often eat a very homogenous diet, simply for the sake of convenience.
Having said that, I don’t eat their meals exclusively – when I’m on mom duty, I tend to cook full meals, or when my friend is over for brunch… but when I’m the only one I need to feed and I have a to-do list that runs onto two pages, I will most often resort to sandwiches unless I have something healthy like this that I can quickly whip up. (The downside to this is that if you’re looking for feedback on whether I achieved ketosis by eating nothing but their keto package, I’m not going to be able to help you with an answer.)
My first order
I started by ordering the keto package, because I have plenty of carbs in my home already, but not enough veggies and protein. I chose pretty much every option available, so I could really try out the quality of a full variety of their foods. They showed up on the Sunday I asked for them, and I put the packages immediately into my freezer for future use.
I was actually pretty excited about trying the first one for lunch the next day – I had lots of options to sift through, and I love being able to choose my meal based on what I’m feeling like at that moment, rather than based on what leftovers I still have to wade through. I’m also at a point in my life where I no longer enjoy cooking, so getting a full, balanced and prepared meal that only needs reheating is pretty much ideal for me.
Food to power your lifestyle
When I sat down at the table to eat my meal, I have to admit that it looked really small…a meat serving and a vegetable serving, and that was it. But by the end of it, I was surprisingly full, and that feeling lasted for several hours. I’ve worked my way through that entire package by now, and the worst I can say about it is that you need to be careful not to over-heat the shrimp or they’ll end up a little chewy.
Next I ordered the fat-loss package, because I wanted to continue to control my portions (oh, and lose some fat), but I did want to incorporate some more carbs into the options at my disposal. These have proven to also be quite delicious, but I have found myself almost OVER-full from these dishes! Now, I’m still not yet getting the exercise I should be, but these dishes served me well, whether it was an active day or not.
I’ve since ordered the weight-loss package, so I’ll add an addendum to this blog post at some point to give you an update on those meals when I start getting into them.
What I loved
As a bit of an overview of what I loved:
- I love that they’re better balanced meals than I manage to make for myself
- I love the amount of veggies that I now have in my diet from these meals
- I do rather love the taste of almost all of these meals, I have to say – they’re tasty!
- I love how energized and light I feel from the keto package meals (whether I add some carbs on the side or not)
- I love how clean I feel after eating these for a few days straight
- I love that the food looks, tastes and has the consistency of ‘real’ food, not processed food.
- I love that local chefs have put these together
- I love that it’s a Canadian company!
A couple of caveats
To balance things out a little, there are a couple of notes that I’d like to add on the needs-improvement side. First off, I wish they didn’t come in black plastic containers – these can’t be recycled, and it makes me feel guilty every time I eat one.
As well, be aware that if you want to choose the meals you get, you will have to click on the icon below the meal package…if you simply choose the package itself, you won’t get a chance to edit the meals before checkout. I’ve tried reaching out to customer service after making that mistake, and they sadly have no way to update your order after it’s placed to accommodate for changes.
To close off, I’ll say that I’ll probably continue to order from them so that I do have some healthy options in my freezer for the days where I’m only cooking for myself. The price point is a little steep per meal, but when I count all the fresh produce I end up throwing out because I just can’t cook and eat it fast enough, then I feel like it maybe it balances out a bit. I hate that waste.
