Welcome to FitIn! Please introduce yourself.
My name is Wes Van Hart. I’m a lifestyle coach and personal trainer. I’ve been coaching for two years, and training others for three.
I have twelve years of experience with personal fitness, weight training, nutrition & diet.
When I was a teenager I dealt with a thyroid issue that resulted in severe issues with weight loss that led to confidence issues throughout my early to late teens.
At 21 my thyroid issue reverted and my metabolism stripped me of 140lbs in a year: from 300lbs to 160lbs.
Tell us a bit about your approach to training?
My focus is primarily on the development of stability and proper mobility before introducing any weights to my training programs.
I encourage all of my clients to focus on developing a mind-muscle connection before attempting to lift heavy or strenuously.
What inspires you on a daily basis?
I have coaches and mentors who have attributed to all of the knowledge and experience that I have accumulated over the years.
They keep me motivated and inspired by providing me with constant feedback on my coaching methods; information on nutrition & fitness and my overall mentality, behaviour and attitude.
What’s your absolute favourite thing to do?
My absolute favourite thing to do is work on myself; I’ve spent a long time working through mental & physical health issues that inhibited growth in my early 20s and I’ve since been playing “catch-up”.
What’s your greatest fitness challenge, and how do you deal with it?
My greatest fitness challenge would have had to be learning about and working through my nerve damage.
I have relatively severe nerve damage in my left hip and leg – I have one leg shorter than the other, and learning how to engage both legs properly has been my biggest challenge to date.
Only until recently – after I taking a mobility training course – did I learn how to properly engage the muscles below my hips.
If you could work out with anyone alive or dead, who would it be?
If I could work out with anyone… It would have to be Arnold Schwarzenegger.
I would love to gain some insight on old-school training styles. Plus, I think it would just be an amazing experience to train with Arnie!!
If you could do one thing (that you can’t currently do), what would it be?
If I could do one thing that I currently can’t do… it would be snowboarding.
Due to my hip and leg issue, I’ve been barred from winter sports because of the running risk of tailbone and hip damage.
